The building of Foundation
the story behind it all...

The developing of Foundation Sires began in 1999, at which time there was one employee and one bull to market, and few commission salesmen. The semen was stored in small tanks and the bull was housed in Alberta. Since 1999, Foundation Sires has seen many changes, from the in-home office to the recent 600 foot main barn facility. It has seen the birth of its sister organization Foundation Genetics and together they have grown from one employee to 10 office employees and 21 salesmen. There has also been the addition of a Western Canadian partner, Bouchard Livestock and several international distributors in over 20 countries.

President and founder of Foundation Sires and Genetics, Brian Coghlin has been a dairy farmer and classifier for 15 years when he decided to pursue his passion to promote deep cow families...an idea on which Foundation is still strongly built.

The idea behind Foundation is to bring good "cow sense" back into the bull selection process. It is a private corporation with shareholders in both Canada and the United States. All shareholders (aside from Brian) milk cows everyday which allows the decisions to be made at the farm level, making it a producer driven movement. There are 30 shareholders here in Canada, and they are involved as they believe in the same ideas as Brian--and they invest in what Foundation stands for. The producers involved are from a variety of different farms and management systems--both high profile show herds and large commercial herds. As the dairy industry continues to change from the small farm to large operations, different traits such as longevity and fertility need to be addressed. Such traits are considered priority by the Foundation Sires Sire Selection Committee when they consider a bull and cow family.

While the facility itself wasn't built, the mission of Foundation was well on its way as Brian listened to the breeder's concerns and dissatisfaction with the young sires that were being promoted. Brian chose to focus on the common sense breeding and deep cow families rather than index.

Since its inception, Foundation Sires began collecting data and it was sent to be processed by the Canadian Dairy Network (CDN) so that eventually the bulls would be certified as "Canadian Proven".

The talks of building the sister company-Foundation Genetics-began in 2004. This company would involve a stud and housing facilities that would allow the bulls to be housed in Ontario and collected on site. Foundation Genetics has since expanded from the weekly routine "in-house" collection, to incorporating an "on-farm" collection service that allows farmers to have their bulls collected and still use them for their own on-farm needs.

In 2005, Foundation Genetics began working with the CFIA to become an accredited semen receiving centre, which meant that the facility could import orders directly from their international clients. What had began as just an idea became a reality on Friday September 2nd 2005 when the doors of "North America's Newest State-of-the-Art Custom Collection and Bull Housing Facility" opened.

Today, Foundation Sires is housing approximately 40 bulls on site and with the addition in 2009 of the North Complex, Foundation Genetics can now house 170 bulls in individual pens.  We welcome all beef and dairy cattle producers with the desire to strengthen their herds genetics, not only for the present but also for the future generations to come. Our firm commitment to our customer is a quality product you can count on!
