SIMPLE MATH

On Proof Day we are swamped with new numbers and long lists of data that at very best can be viewed by producers as confusing and most of the time irrelevant towards their own needs. Constantly producers are forced to re-adjust in order to keep up with changes in proof information and new formulas.

The Holstein Canada video "Functional Profitability of Conformation" teaches us that cows scoring Good Plus and better generate 17% more profit on the farm. So what kind of profit do the top 10% (VG or EX) of cows generate? You can see it with your own eyes when looking at the Lifetime Production List that close to 80% of the cows on that list are scored VG or EX!

Now we are back to extremely high costs for replacement heifers across North America and we are in fact experiencing a world shortage of dairy products. Doesn't it make sense to take a serious look at longevity?

The "Genetic Giants" all through the history of our breed have been bulls that consistently leave these above average cows. They are not the sires that are on the "List" one day and off the next. It is just simple math - the rate at which these bulls can make the "Good Ones".

Top Bull on the LPI List

The #1 bull in Jan 2008 scored 1 in 25 VG or EX
The #1 bull in Feb 2007 scored 1 in 13 VG or EX
The #1 bull in May 2006 scored 1 in 46 VG or EX
